ArtsAlive 2009

ArtsAlive - August 17-19, 2009

ArtsAlive, a Lehigh Prelusion Program, was held August 17-19, 2009 for in-coming students interested in the arts. Lehigh Prelusion Programs are in addition to full orientation. This program is not just for arts majors. Students who participated majored in Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Journalism, Sociology/Social Psychology as well as Art & Architecture and Design Arts.

Over the three days, students had hands-on experiences in the arts as they engaged in various workshops which included: dance/breathing movement; drumming circle; improv; yoga; learning to play a violin; hot-glass and more.

Students were also introduced to the local community by visiting points of interest. Stops at several eclectic stores on the Southside as well as getting a taste of the many cultures flourishing in the area by sampling meals from various ethnic regions were part of the program.

Here are some comments from students who have previously participated in ArtsAlive:

“Students should participate in ArtsAlive because it shows them lots of opportunities in the arts that they may never otherwise experience or even know exist here at Lehigh or in the community, such as the Banana Factory or the costume shop in Zoellner. ArtsAlive is a great program that brings students of all classes together and helps them start making an appearance on the Lehigh Arts scene, regardless of how involved they are with the arts.” Sean Kelly, ’10-Computer Engineering

artsalive011.jpgI think it really makes me appreciate the arts more. Like with acting and theatre, I’d never been part of before and to see the tour of Zoellner again and try to do the stage make-up I never knew how much went into it. So now if I see a play, I can appreciate something more. I really want to see a choir concert or play production this year. I think ArtsAlive allows everyone to explore the arts and try things they normally wouldn’t, or wouldn’t have known of the opportunity. ArtsAlive really makes it possible to sample all the different types of arts available on campus and in the surrounding area. I think if students want to appreciate art and create some, then I think ArtsAlive is the perfect program to do that without feeling overwhelmed, because you don’t need to have prior experience…just the desire.” Lisa Luzzi, ’09-Mathematics

“This is my fourth year participating in the ArtsAlive program, and I can’t say enough reasons to get involved. Incoming students who sign up for ArtsAlive are able to acquaint themselves with upperclassmen and faculty, the departments of the arts, the town of Bethlehem and the campus itself at least three days before the rest of the incoming students arrive. Meanwhile, throughout all these introductions, the students are whetting their appetites for possible academic and extracurricular interests they may enjoy in their upcoming semester. How can you beat that deal? I can’t imagine kicking off a year at Lehigh without ArtsAlive!” Lauren Cuoco, ’08-Journalism, Sociology/Social Psychology
