Favorite Professor: Hayashi sensei always made class fun and interesting, and Lee sensei is also very kind and helpful--so I really can't choose between the two. I would also recommend Professor Wylie and his courses.

Hooked on Asian Studies because:I love learning about Asian cultures and languages because they are so completely different from our own! I like learning to write Japanese because it is like solving a puzzle as you slowly learn the different characters and see them all come together. Also, I think Asian artwork and writing is beautiful.

Hooked on Asian Studies because: I had a great interest in medieval culture when I was younger. In reading about the arms and armor of European knights, I found pictures of samurai equipment, and I've been hooped on Japan ever since. Since then, my interest has expanded into Japanese culture, history, and language as well as eastern religion and philosophy. My language proficiency complements my technological background well becasue of the strong links between the U.S. and Japan.

Kanoko Shimizu

Graduate (2003)

Asian Studies Future: Japanese language teacher.

Hooked on Asian Studies because: I have a long standing interest in the American view of Asia, especially Japan, and what it reveals about the values and culture of the U.S. Taking Chinese and Japanese culture classes give me many opportunities to learn more about American values by noticing the cultural differences that catch the attention and emotion of students.

Jessica Marie Nixon

Graduate (2003)
Major: Asian Studies
Study Abroad:Nanjing University in Nanjing, China
Asian Studies Interests: Chinese Language, Asian Religion, Chinese culture and food!

Hooked on Asian Studies because: China was amazing and opened my eyes to a whole new world. The people, places, food-everything was wonderful. It was awesome to slowly learn the language and then be able to actually use it to communicate. I think living in China was one of the most profound experiences of my life, and I can't wait to go back to my second home.
