Student News 2009

Lisa Boyd and Jason Kramer ’10, International Relations majors, have spent much of the past year examining how to bring about change in a country mired in inefficiency. The two students were last year’s winners of the Social Venture Creation Competition in the Eureka! Ventures Competition Series, which is directed by Lisa Getzler-Linn. They have used their monetary award to improve the availability of clean drinking water in Tanzania.

In the African nation of Uganda, the word *Bula has many meanings. For former Lehigh field hockey player and IR major, Melissa Fricke, the preferred meaning of the word translates to “blanket.” After graduating from Lehigh in 2006, Fricke spent four months in Uganda, volunteering in a children’s home and teaching at the local primary school. It was an eye-opening experience for the Long Island native, who was appalled at the conditions in which children were expected to learn*(Bula:  "Better Understanding of Life in Africa")

Congratulations IR majors!!

The IR department’s highest honor given to an academically outstanding graduating senior has two recipients this year. The Aurie N. Dunlap Prize in International Relations was awarded to Molly Cramsey and Daniel Newcombe. 

Molly Cramsey was also the recipient of Carey B. Joynt International Relations Leadership Award.  This award was established in 1986 to honor a student for outstanding service to the department.

Congratulations IR majors!!

Lehigh University's Women's Club has named one of our International Relations majors, Molly Cramsey '09, The 2008 Lehigh University Women's Club Scholar for the College of Arts and Sciences.  This prestigious award is presented annually for academic excellence and outstanding service to the university community.  The Department of International Relations faculty and staff congratulate Molly upon this fantastic accomplishment!!

Sean McKeever, Senior IR major, was accepted to present his honors thesis, entitled "A New Paradigm: A NGO-Centered Approach to Development." at the 5th Annual Social Research/Social Justice Conference, to be held at Muhlenberg College on Friday, April 4, 2008.  Congratulations, Sean!!

  • The IR department’s highest honor given to an academically outstanding graduating senior, The Aurie N. Dunlap Prize in International Relations was awarded to Eleanor Mattern.

  • The George B. Lemon Prize for Outstanding Work by Eckardt Scholars was awarded to:
    • Tori (Victoria) Federico, "The resource curse of human development."
    • Nora (Eleanor) Mattern, "The illicit trade in cultural property and the international response."
  • The Williams Senior Writing Prizes were awarded to three International Relations majors, after three IR majors swept the first three prizes last year:
    • Stephanie Berger "Sports and International Relations: A Literature Review"
    • Eugene Kiselev "War and Peace…and Natural Resources: A Study of the Relationship between Commodity Export and Onset of Armed Conflict"
    • Jeffrey Shaw "The Seventeenth Amendment: The Folly of the Direct Election of Senators"
  • The winner of the Donald T. Campbell Research Prize for outstanding social science research is once again, our very own, Victoria (Tori) Federico. Her submission of, "The Curse of Natural Resources and Human Development," made quite an impression on the Campbell Research Prize committee praising it for its professional presentation, excellent writing, and thoughtful analysis of the role of natural resources and institutions in human development.

  • Update on Internship Offers - April 2007:

    There are now six of our IR majors who received offers from the State Department.  They are:

    Kelsey Hunter (Class of 2008) received an offer from the State Department working for the consulate in Canada. Unfortunately, she had to decline but accepted an offer to intern with Goldman Sachs.

    Joshua Steifel (Class of 2009) received an offer from the State Department which he declined because he had already accepted one with Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) to work on her foreign policy team.

    Agata Strezlec (Class of 2008) received an offer from the FBI.  Unfortunately, she had to decline but instead will be working for APCO Worldwide in NYC this summer.

    Meredith Aach (Class of 2008) will be working for the bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL).

    Christine Hannon (Class of 2009) who received two separate offers from State.  One for Political Military Affairs and one from the Political section at our Embassy in Tunisia. She has (wisely) decided to go to Tunis.

    Joseph Guay (Class of 2009) will be working on the Iraq desk.
