Choral Arts - March 30, 2008

Lou Harrison's "Kara Sutra" performed with original insturment. Performed by Lehigh's percussion ensemble.
This video shows the instrument assembly and trial run.

The short clip shows you a couple of things:
1. the instrument, and it's puzzling assembly
2. the sounds of the gamelan
3. up close look that you may not see in concert
4. When people talk about research in the arts... this is it.
5. hey!... Lehigh has a percussion ensemble!
Feel free to pass this along to friends

This is a crazy instrument shipped from California. The Lehigh University percussion ensemble had to figure out how to assemble it. Only a couple of pictures came in the shipping materials. They're learning how to play it for the Choral concert on March 29th.
The instrument was fashioned after Indonesian influences, and built with construction materials; metal pipes, cardboard tubes for resonance chambers and cut air tanks for the larger gong sounds.
